What's for Dinner?
My child came out
during a card game.
Whose turn
is it next?
I'm gay.
What should we have for dinner?
My child is an artist,
doodling in notebooks;
laughing
at their own thoughts.
They can capture
the crease of jeans
or a wrinkled tee
with a creator's eye.
Threw away all their dresses
before college;
their favorite hoody
is bright yellow
with a rainbow on it.
College keeps them inspired,
and they have lots of friends.
They're happy.
My parents didn't support my going to school.
Did not value
following dreams,
paycheck to paycheck
a way of life,
a future
of only next month.
I worked in high school,
I paid for college,
dropped out,
no one cared.
I love them for everything they are.
I already knew,
looked up at them
and said,
Chicken Fettuccine.
